Minnesota Communities
Native American Minnesotans
This door is on the spine because every Compass cultural community in Minnesota gets covered — wide and deep, no leftover. Compass count is not government-to-government. Open the Eleven Nations CI for sovereignty. Urban Native is not off the list.
History, culture, and life today
History and place
Origins
Full origin chapters grow to African American depth as we write them. Nothing is lite because the count is smaller. Pattern now. Ethnography next. Unvarnished.

Culture and everyday life
How to use this — who this is, who this is not
This door is on the spine because every Compass cultural community in Minnesota gets covered — wide and deep, no leftover. Compass count is not government-to-government. Open the Eleven Nations CI for sovereignty. Urban Native is not off the list.
Counts disagree across ACS vintages. Compass uses IPUMS ACS 2019–2023. Date what you cite. People in more than one group can appear in more than one Compass profile.
This is not a racial module. This is not a Tribal Nation unless the household is. This is not permission to skip language access or the Toolkit.
Minnesota specifically
Guest. Pay. Report back. An eList is not engagement.
Core concepts
Compass count is not government-to-government. Open the Eleven Nations CI for sovereignty. Urban Native is not off the list. That is the first grammar. The rest is written at full depth, not guessed to look complete.
Language, names, communication
An interpreter labeled with a country name can still be the wrong language.
What you will not conclude
If you leave saying you know this people now, the intelligence failed. It became a capsule.
Services, opportunity, and participation
Other considerations — unvarnished
ERGs may add. They may not delete a fact because it is hard to say in a Minimization room.
Connections to human services
Identical process is Minimization. Universal goal, targeted channel. This door exists so the packet has a household in it.
Continue the connection
History and the decisions we make today
In this lesson
- Connect a historical condition described in the brief to a present-day service question.
- Distinguish community-level context from an individual’s circumstances.
- Identify evidence needed before changing a service requirement.

Consider this fictional situation
A team is preparing an outreach meeting with people whose experiences are discussed in Native American Minnesotans. Before choosing one format, what would you want to learn from the people who might attend?
Use the community context to prepare questions, not to decide the answers for participants. Ask about language, access, timing, and how people want to contribute. Explain what they can influence and how the team will respond to their input.
Family, identity, and individual experience
In this lesson
- Recognize differences in identity, language, and experience within a community.
- Ask about a person’s relationships without prescribing who should be involved.
- Identify an assumption that could distort a service conversation.

Consider this fictional situation
A person names a close friend as an important source of support. How would you learn what that relationship means for the decision being discussed?
Ask the person how they want their friend involved, and explain any relevant requirements. A community description cannot establish whom an individual trusts or what support they want.
From understanding to an equity analysis
In this lesson
- Identify a specific access barrier in a proposed process.
- Name whose input would help evaluate the decision.
- Choose a way to check whether a revision improves access.

Consider this fictional situation
A team has offered a listening session but has not explained what changed afterward. What would strengthen the work?
Explain what input affected the decision, what remains unresolved, and how participants can respond. Attendance is useful information, but it does not show that the decision became more responsive.
