Disability as identity and culture
Disability is a medical fact and an eligibility category in our records. It is also an identity, a history and a culture, and that second description changes what careful public-administration work looks like.
What you’ll be able to do
- Describe at least three things disability culture holds — history, language, art and humor, shared values — and explain what treating disability only as a medical category costs a division decision.
- Compare the responses to this question and explain your choice: What is the most accurate response?
- Document a next step for Disability as identity and culture: Look at one list your team maintains of cultures, communities or audiences. Notice whether disability appears at all, and whether it appears as a medical category or as a community with its own expertise.
