If it is in front of you, use the health and legal doors. Do not workshop it as a story circle. Do not make a mother the curriculum.
Stigma around LGBTQ+ people is real in many conservative Muslim families — and not only there. A brief does not tell you to out a young person to their parents. Use the person’s name. LGBTQ+ inclusion in services still applies. Family rejection is a safety issue, not a cultural excuse to deadname.
Imams, businessmen, men of a certain clan, a handful of nonprofits, a handful of elected officials — none of them are the whole. Women, Maay speakers, people with disabilities, youth, and people who left the mosque also live here. If your only Somali voice is one broker used as the whole community, you have a capsule with a name.
Parents in the MDH study and in public advocacy described being unheard, then punished. Unvarnished includes that fear. It does not mean you never report. It means you know what a knock at the door already means, you use an interpreter, and you do not treat a missed appointment as proof of neglect without a who.
