Minnesota Nice — see Heart. The operating system.
Lutheran-civic residue
Even among Catholics, evangelicals, Muslims, and the unaffiliated: suspicion of display, duty, committees, the sermon as civic speech, Jantelagen-adjacent “don’t think you’re special.” Not every Minnesotan is Lutheran. The civic air still tastes like it.
Lake and winter
Recreation as identity for some. Winter as a moral test (“we don’t complain”). Neither is a personality for a waiver household that cannot start a car.
Education as civic religion
Louder than the American average. We are the state that ranks itself. Achievement gaps the state publishes on itself sit next to that pride. Hold both.
Progressive self-image
We vote, we volunteer, we are not Mississippi. Some of the widest racial disparities in the United States in income, homeownership, and criminal-legal contact — date MDH, Compass, and Council on Crime and Justice figures when you cite them. The gap is Minnesota. Nice without the gap is a lullaby.
Equal process
The American sameness-as-fairness concept, intensified. Equity as targeted channel will be felt as unfair until you can say it in this hymn’s language: universal goal, different door, same dignity.
Conflict-avoidance as governance
Meetings without a decision. Consensus as delay. Nation-to-nation consult that is actually a presentation. Ask: what did we decide? Who will do it by when?
Understatement
Boast is a crime. Direct praise can embarrass. Direct criticism can end a relationship. The work is being plain without performing a coastal confrontation style.
You work with these. You do not perform a hotdish.
