These concepts recur. They are hypotheses you still test on this family.
Familismo
Kin as the unit of decision and care. Hypothesis: the person who talks in the lobby may not be the person who decides, and the caregiver on the form may not be the caregiver at 2 a.m. Ask who should be in the room. Not a license to ignore the adult in front of you. Not a license to skip mandated reporting.
Respeto
Titles, elders, register (usted). Hypothesis: a first-name lobby and a joking tone can read as contempt. Follow this room. Respeto is not submission, and it is not permission for staff to accept a courtesy-yes as a plan.
Personalismo
Relationship before a long form. Hypothesis: the first visit may be about whether you are safe, not about the exception process. That is not delay. The clock still exists for medical and legal time. You name the conflict instead of punishing the relationship.
Confianza
Trust is built. It is not demanded on visit one. Enforcement climate, a bad interpreter, a child used as the mouth, an SSN field that feels like a trap — these spend confianza before you have it.
Variation is the point. A U.S.-born professional, a Maya plant worker, a Puerto Rican household, and an evangelical grandmother do not share a Tuesday. You work with these hypotheses. You do not perform them. You do not write “noncompliant” when you mean “the form was a stranger.” Staff do not use familismo as an icebreaker or a risk score. If the family names it, you listen.
