Ecuador is not one people inside one flag. Costa, Sierra, Amazon/Oriente, Galápagos. Kichwa (Runa Shimi) and other indigenous nations live inside the republic. Shuar and other Amazonian peoples. Afro-Ecuadorian streams in Esmeraldas and the Valle del Chota. Mestizo majority narratives do not erase those histories. Shared Spanish is not shared culture.
History for the meeting
Spanish colonial rule, Catholic mission, indigenous survival, African enslavement on the coast, a republic, and later dollarization and emigration produced the streams you will meet. “Hispanic” on a U.S. form is an ethnicity checkbox. People in this page check white, Black, American Indian, other, two or more. The form that treats Hispanic as a race has already mashed.
What people brought
What people brought: Spanish varieties and indigenous languages, kinship, parish and later evangelical church, work knowledge, and a living memory of a state and of a crisis that moved people. What they met in Minnesota: an English form, one Latino module, often one interpreter labeled Spanish, and a Mexican default.
History is literacy for the desk. It is not a speech you give the family. Do not start with food, a hat, or a Heritage Month sentence.
