Workplace culture and service delivery are both candidates.
Language: an interpreter labeled Chinese who does not speak this household’s language is a closed door. Cantonese is not Mandarin. Taishanese, Hokkien, and Shanghainese exist. Still book a qualified interpreter. A list is not the person and not the dialect. Do not use a child. Gender match may be requested in maternal and intimate care. Traditional versus simplified is a print choice.
Names: family name first. Wong and Wang can be the same surname in two systems. The database that reverses order or “corrects” to pinyin invents a person. Do not demand the “real” name of an adoptee.
Hour caps, exception processes, and life-sharing matches without the language they use are not culturally neutral. An English IEP is a gate for the parent who does not read it.
Model-minority: 86.0 percent high school and 62.4 percent bachelor’s will be used to skip 29.2 percent LEP, 14.0 percent less than high school, 8.6 percent poverty, disability, and the child who is not thriving. That skip is the policy.
PRC and Taiwan: you do not referee. COVID-era anti-Asian climate is current structure. Do not collect status you do not need. Do not treat fear as noncompliance.
Notices and comment: an eList and an English PDF is not how this community was reached. Empty follow-up cells are theater. Greater Minnesota is 18.2 percent — a Minneapolis meeting is not the whole channel.
Workforce: Chinese staff are not the interpreter pool and not the community. Staff are colleagues, not the curriculum. Do not treat them.
Asian mash: opening Hmong or Vietnamese or Korean or Japanese because the checkbox says Asian is a closed door.
Legislation, funding, rule: you cannot advocate for a channel you will not study. This cultural intelligence exists so the 40% has a household in it — not a paternalistic program designed in a building that never learned that Cantonese is not Mandarin.
